A Perfume Enthusiasts’ Guide to Learn, Retain and Remember new fragrance notes!

“A CREATIVE MIND, ARTISTIC HEART AND A TRAINED NOSE CAN DO WONDERS.”

God has given the best chromatograph to all human beings. Even a mosquito can detect the lactic acid present in our body. Describing a perfume and its notes is a very difficult task, as we all have the same olfactory receptors, however, olfactory receptors of different people work differently, this is related to emotions and perceptions. We as human beings are each very different– “EVERY PERSON IS UNIQUE SO IS THEIR FRAGRANCE.” We have also heard that “No two persons can smell the perfume in the same way”. One doesn’t need to be a perfumer to perfect the sense of smelling or train the nose to differentiate the notes and ingredients of a perfume.

Remember these basic steps!

Now to train your nose, the best practice is, to smell the raw materials separately with your eyes closed taking slow and calm breath.

Retain their scent to help your brain memorize their perfume in your own description. Repeat it on intervals to create a library in your brain. The notes that come instantly are top notes. These are highly volatile materials that evaporate fast. Although, there is no set rules, but these low boiling point materials with high volatility can dominate your nose for 15 to 30 minutes.

Going deep you will find the heart / middle notes. This is the link between the top note and the base note. These are slow evaporators that lasts a bit longer than top notes. These can stay up to 45 minutes to 1 hour.

The base notes are the high boiling point materials that stays for long and give the fragrance longevity and durability.

No one can be 100%, still a trained nose can differentiate the notes and a creative mind can recall the names of the aroma ingredients easily.
